Color Shift, explained

A complete guide to the free browser puzzle: the rules, how connected tiles work, round progression, scoring, and common questions.

A color puzzle built around one satisfying idea

Color Shift is a free, single-player color-fill puzzle you can play in your browser, with no account or download required. Start from the top-left tile, change the color of your connected group, and absorb neighboring tiles that match. The goal is to make all 64 tiles the same color before you use all your moves.

How Color Shift works

Each round begins with an 8 × 8 grid of colored tiles. Your starting tile defines your growing area. When you change to a different color, every touching tile of that color joins the area. The move counter tracks each color change, so choosing a color already on the board does not count as progress.

Plan before you shift

Look beyond the nearest tile. A useful color may connect two separate edges of your territory at once. Corners and narrow paths can take several moves to reach, so notice which colors create the biggest connected groups before choosing your next move.

Levels, difficulty, and score

Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard before starting a level. Each difficulty has a different starting color count and move budget; later levels add colors and gradually tighten that budget. Clear each board to advance, earn more points when you finish with moves left, and your level and score are saved separately for each difficulty in this browser.

Color Shift questions

Can I play Color Shift in my browser for free?

What is the goal of the puzzle?

Make the entire 8 × 8 board one color by absorbing connected tiles from the top-left tile before you run out of moves.

Does Color Shift have a timer?

No. The challenge is planning within a move limit, not racing a clock. Take time to consider how each color connects to your territory.
